    Founding of the city: Structure is often associated with Romulus and this time.

Physical evidence

  • Two parts – a higher and a lower. The lower was generally closed and likely was a cavity in the earth.
  • Some place the Mundus on the Palatine
  • Based on Plutarch, it may have been near the Comitium
  • According to Cato, the shape mirrored that of the heavens
  • Sometimes associated with the Umbilicus urbis
